North Africa: New luxury inside the Sahara

A luxury stay in the Sahara Desert in Tunisia's southwest delivers a very beautiful stay to appease the interior adventurer. Anantara Tozeur Resort just opened within the sandy domain, which is Anantara's first property in North Africa.

The property has 93 luxurious rooms using the pick to be the Royal Villas, boasting more than 800 square metres of indoor living space by having an open-plan lounge, sunken diner and majlis. The outdoor space features stunning views of the Chott el Djerid salt flats – the largest inside the Sahara – which may be enjoyed in the dining area or even the infinity pool.

Guests can immerse in the Sahara visiting the Tozeur Medina and all sorts of its sights and sounds, going for a ride in the horse and carriage to taste Deglet Nour dates in the lush palm grove, and going to the Berber villages abandoned in 1967 after flooding. The village at Mides Canyon is quite striking while at the mountain oasis of Tamerza, guests can have a swim within the superior rock pool. Another option certain to please avid Star Wars fans is to carry out the guided quad bike tour for the Chott el Djerid, where many scenes in the original movie and subsequent sequels and prequels were shot.

The dining experience at Anantara Tozeur is impressive, with five bars and restaurants including Whiskeypedia having a global whiskey menu, and the Arabian Cultural Village. This experience is magical, put down in traditional souk style with outside tent housing, authentic entertainment, and also the taste sensations of Arabian Nights Restaurant. Delight in local flavours such as brik à l’oeuf, camel steaks, Golla along with other national delicacies prepared within the traditional way by having an open fire.

The resort also offers the Asian inspired Mekong and Sarab, where guests may go through a fusion of Mediterranean, Arab and Tunisian cuisines. Dining by Design is another wonderful option, having a choice of a candlelit dinner for 2 within the desert inside a movie set from Antonio Banderas' Black Gold, or perhaps in a personal residence in Tozeur. A Spice Spoons cooking class is also available, starting off with a visit to the local market and among Anantara's chefs to get a swag of spices and other ingredients before preparing a storm back in the hotel.
